Lake Winnebago, Freshwater lake in east-central Wisconsin, US.

Lake Winnebago is a freshwater body in east-central Wisconsin covering roughly 137 square miles (355 square kilometers) with an average depth around 15 feet (4.5 meters), home to walleye, sturgeon and other fish. Three counties share the shoreline, while many shallow bays and sandbars shape the terrain beneath the surface.

The water formed roughly 12,000 years ago as glaciers retreated, leaving behind a remnant of Glacial Lake Oshkosh. Native American settlements clustered along the shores before European settlers expanded fishing and shipping in the 1800s.

The Ho-Chunk people gave the water its roots, though their Algonquin neighbors called them Winnebago because of the fishy smell that rose from the shallows. Anglers and recreational captains still shape life along the shore year-round, while small harbor towns maintain their own customs at the water's edge.

Public boat ramps and marinas offer access points around the shoreline, while designated zones allow swimming and non-motorized craft. The shallow waters can become busy in summer, especially on weekends and near larger towns.

When winter freezes the surface, thousands of ice-fishing shelters spread across the water, forming temporary neighborhoods with streets and landmarks. Some anglers spend entire weekends inside these heated structures, which may have electricity and even televisions.
