Oneida Community, Religious communal society in Oneida, United States
Oneida Community was a religious residential group in New York State housed in a large mansion with shared sleeping quarters, dining halls, and workshops. The complex also included outbuildings for craft enterprises and storage areas where members produced and distributed their goods.
John Humphrey Noyes founded the group in 1848 as a social experiment with new forms of living together. The society disbanded in 1881 after internal conflicts and outside pressure made continuing the original model impossible.
Mansfield
The main building still stands today and can be viewed from outside, with select rooms occasionally accessible. The surrounding grounds show traces of former workshops and gardens that once sustained the group.
Members practiced mutual criticism in organized sessions where everyone else discussed their faults and weaknesses publicly. This method was meant to encourage personal growth while maintaining social control within the group.
