280 Broadway, Department store building in Lower Manhattan, United States.

The seven-story marble structure at 280 Broadway exhibits Italianate architecture with large windows and a prominent corner position at Chambers Street.

Built in 1846 for Alexander Turney Stewart, this building marked the beginning of department store development in New York City as the first commercial retail space.

The structure housed the New York Sun newspaper from 1917 to 1966, serving as a central hub for journalism during a transformative period in American media.

The building contains 150,000 square feet of office space occupied by New York City government departments and 100,000 square feet of retail area.

The exterior features a four-sided clock installed in 1917 and a two-sided thermometer from 1936, marking time and temperature for passing pedestrians.
