Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, Marine sanctuary in Massachusetts, United States
Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is a protected ocean area off the Massachusetts coast that lies between Cape Ann and Cape Cod. It features an underwater plateau where water depths change significantly, creating unique conditions for marine life.
A naval officer named Henry Stellwagen conducted the first detailed mapping of this marine area in 1854. The area received its formal protection as a national sanctuary in 1992 after becoming recognized as an important marine ecosystem.
The sanctuary maintains several underwater shipwrecks that document New England's maritime heritage and serve as research sites for marine archaeologists and historians.
The best time to visit is between April and October when many whale species frequent the nutrient-rich waters. Visitors can join whale watching boat tours departing from several nearby coastal ports and towns.
The underwater plateau generates upwelling currents that draw over a hundred marine species, including humpback whales and the rare North Atlantic right whale. These conditions make the area one of the most productive ocean ecosystems on the eastern seaboard.
