Sion Hill, Federal mansion in Havre de Grace, United States.
Sion Hill is a three-part brick structure with a five-bay central block and two flanking wings oriented toward the Chesapeake Bay. The property spans considerable land with views of the bay and retains its original central hall floor plan.
The project began in 1785 as a seminary for Reverend John Ireland but was sold unfinished to Gideon Denison in 1795. The Rodgers family later acquired the property and made it their residence.
The house served as home to the Rodgers family, whose members held prominent positions in the Navy. The place reflects this family's importance in American naval history.
The location offers water views and bay perspectives that visitors can appreciate from the grounds. It makes sense to explore both the building and its surroundings to understand the setting fully.
A remarkable event occurred in 1911 when Ensign John Rodgers made a flight from this location to visit his parents. This marked the first time in America that someone traveled to see family by airplane.
