Concord Point Light
Concord Point Light, Historic lighthouse in Havre de Grace, Maryland
Concord Point Light is a 10-meter granite tower standing where the Susquehanna River meets the Chesapeake Bay. The structure sits at a strategic point that was essential for guiding ships safely through these busy waters.
Construction began in 1827 to improve navigation at this dangerous river-to-bay meeting point. John O'Neill, a local hero from the War of 1812, served as its first keeper.
The keeper's house displays exhibits about maritime history and how the Chesapeake Bay shaped the region's way of life. Visitors can see how people once lived and worked in this coastal community.
The grounds are open daily, with guided tours on weekends from April through October that include historical demonstrations. Wear appropriate clothing for windy conditions and allow time to explore the adjacent museum.
The granite came from the Port Deposit quarry and the building still operates with its original Fresnel lens. This technical continuity offers insight into how navigation technology functioned over time.
