Dillon

Dillon is the county seat of its namesake county in eastern South Carolina, situated near the Little Pee Dee River. Its central Main Street is lined with numerous buildings from the early 1900s that define the commercial heart of the downtown area.

James W. Dillon founded the settlement in 1888 after establishing the Wilson Short Cut Railroad, which later became part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. This rail connection was crucial in driving the city's growth and shaping its development as a regional hub.

The downtown core contains two historic districts that reflect how the city evolved, with residential areas and commercial zones showing distinct architectural periods. Walking through these neighborhoods reveals how people have lived and worked in different eras.

Interstate 95 provides direct highway access, and Amtrak's Palmetto line operates daily passenger service to major East Coast destinations. Both options make it straightforward for visitors to arrive by car or train.

The Inland Port Dillon, opened in 2018, serves as a direct transportation link to the Port of Charleston and supports regional logistics in a way most visitors don't expect. This modern facility stands in interesting contrast to the historic downtown buildings.
