Shelby Charter Township, Charter township in Macomb County, Michigan, United States.
Shelby Charter Township is a community in Macomb County north of Detroit, with gently rolling terrain dotted by woodlands and open green spaces. The area is crossed by the Clinton River and features a mix of residential neighborhoods, small commercial areas, and preserved natural spaces.
The township was founded in 1827 by the Michigan Territorial Legislature as part of the early settlement of the region. It originally encompassed a larger area before Sterling Heights separated to the south in 1835.
The area grew from farming roots that still echo in some older neighborhoods with their tree-lined streets and family homes. Local community groups and schools form the social backbone of daily life for residents today.
The area is well connected by M-53 Van Dyke Avenue and M-59, providing easy access to the Detroit metropolitan area. A car is helpful for exploring the township, as public transit options are limited in most neighborhoods.
The small village of Disco once sat at the intersection of 24 Mile Road and Van Dyke Road, operating a post office from 1854 to 1906. Today little remains of this early settlement except for the memory of those who know the area's history.
