River Forest

River Forest is a residential village in Cook County located along the Des Plaines River, featuring quiet tree-lined streets and a variety of housing styles. The community extends westward from Chicago with neighborhoods that blend residential charm and green spaces.

The area was originally home to Native American communities before European settlement began after 1831. Early settlers built a steam sawmill on the Des Plaines River, which sparked the growth that eventually became the modern village.

Dominican University and Concordia University Chicago have their main campuses here, shaping the community's character and bringing students and academic life to the village streets. The presence of these institutions gives the area an educational and social focus.

The village connects to Chicago via the Metra Union Pacific West Line with trains running throughout the day. Walking the neighborhoods and exploring the tree-lined streets is easiest during daytime hours when traffic is lighter.

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed several buildings here in his early career, including the Winslow House and the River Forest Tennis Club building. These structures demonstrate his innovative approach to residential and civic architecture within the community.
