Hanson, town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States

Hanson is a small town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts with around ten thousand residents, located about 20 miles south of Boston. The landscape features a mix of older houses and modern homes surrounded by several lakes and ponds such as Indian Head Pond and Wampatuck Pond, which give the area its relaxed character.

Hanson was first settled in 1632 as a farming community before factories and mills developed along rivers in the 1800s. The town was officially incorporated in 1820 and later became central to the cranberry industry, giving rise to the Ocean Spray company, which relocated to Plymouth in 1977.

The town is named after Alexander Contee Hanson, a newspaper publisher who fought for free speech, a legacy that local residents continue to value and remember. Cranberry bogs in the southern areas remain visible reminders of the region's agricultural past and the origins of the Ocean Spray company.

The town is easy to reach by car as local roads connect to major routes, and a train station offers service to Boston for commuters. The best time to explore is during warm weather when you can enjoy the lakes and parks, with flat walking paths throughout the town accessible to visitors of various abilities.

Rocky Marciano, one of the most famous boxers in history, once lived in Hanson and left his mark on the town's sporting heritage. Beyond this, the town also preserves stories of pirates and sailors connected to New England's maritime traditions, which form part of its larger historical narrative.
