St. Nicholas Historic District
St. Nicholas Historic District, Colonial Revival district in Harlem, Manhattan, United States
The St. Nicholas Historic District consists of residential townhouses arranged along West 138th and West 139th Streets between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard.
Initially built from 1891 to 1893 for white residents, the district became available to African American buyers in 1919 for $8,000 per house after facing foreclosure.
The neighborhood housed numerous African American luminaries, including composer Eubie Blake, attorney Alvin Bragg, and tap dancer Bill Robinson during the Harlem Renaissance period.
The district spans 9.9 acres and contains multiple architectural examples from three different firms, featuring Georgian Revival, Colonial Revival, and Italian Renaissance Revival styles.
The buildings retain their original exterior appearances despite interior modifications, with decorative elements and bronze plaques that indicate designated areas for horse carriages.
