Dunbar Apartments, Revenue house in Harlem, United States.
Dunbar Apartments is a residential complex in Manhattan consisting of six buildings arranged in a U-shaped pattern around two central garden courtyards. The ensemble contains approximately 511 housing units, each fitted with modern features like wide-plank oak flooring, recessed lighting, and updated kitchens equipped with stainless steel appliances.
The complex was founded in 1926 by John D. Rockefeller Jr. as the first large cooperative housing development for African American families in Manhattan. Its creation demonstrated that quality housing for Black middle-class families could be achieved in the city during a time of widespread segregation.
The complex became a symbol of Black achievement and middle-class aspiration at a time when such opportunities were severely limited elsewhere. Residents gathered in shared spaces and built a sense of belonging that extended far beyond their individual apartments.
The complex occupies an entire city block with plenty of open green space where visitors can walk and explore the surroundings. Since the buildings are historic landmarks, it is worthwhile to observe the original architecture and the modern touches in the residential units.
On the grounds stood the Dunbar National Bank, Harlem's first financial institution fully managed by African American professionals. This bank stood as a powerful symbol of Black entrepreneurship and economic independence within the community.
