United States Department of Agriculture South Building
United States Department of Agriculture South Building, Government office building in Southwest Washington, D.C., United States
The United States Department of Agriculture South Building extends 458 feet by 944 feet across seven stories with 4,500 rooms at Independence Avenue.
The construction started in 1930 during the Great Depression, and upon completion in 1936, it stood as the largest office building worldwide until the Pentagon.
Relief panels on the building display native American animals including turkeys, eagles, horses, bulls, and rams, created by sculptor Edwin Morris.
Two enclosed pedestrian bridges at the third floor connect the South Building to the USDA Administration Building, allowing efficient movement between departments.
The structure contains twelve north-south wings joined by the Headhouse and Tailhouse, with limestone surfaces facing the National Mall and brick on other sides.
