Enid A. Haupt Garden, Public garden at National Mall, United States.
The Enid A. Haupt Garden is a public park on the National Mall in Washington, located beside the Smithsonian Castle and featuring approximately 4.2 acres of planted grounds with flower beds, sculptures, and seasonal arrangements. The space is divided into several designed sections that showcase different styles and types of vegetation.
The garden was established in 1987 and designed as a tribute to horticulturist Andrew Jackson Downing, with his legacy represented by an urn surrounded by five large linden trees. Its creation was part of a broader development effort for the Smithsonian area on the National Mall.
The garden displays three distinct areas inspired by different design traditions: a formal French parterre section, a space with Islamic fountain elements, and a Chinese-style garden with traditional architectural details. These varied sections show how gardening styles from different parts of the world can coexist in one location.
The garden is located at 10th Street and Independence Avenue in central Washington and welcomes visitors daily from sunrise to sunset with no admission fee. The layout is straightforward to navigate, though sturdy shoes are recommended when visiting after rain.
Two pink granite moon gates, each about 9 feet (3 meters) tall, frame a reflecting pool and come from the Chinese-inspired garden design section. These striking structures are among the most eye-catching design features of the entire park.
