St. Albans, city in West Virginia, United States

St. Albans is a small city in Kanawha County, West Virginia. It has a simple layout with maintained public spaces, residential neighborhoods, and a historic downtown district that welcomes walking and exploration.

People have lived in this region for thousands of years, with archaeological finds showing Native American presence around 8000 to 6000 B.C. European settlement began around 1786 when brothers Lewis and Christopher Tackett built a fort at Coal River.

St. Albans took its current name in 1871 after several earlier names. The town reflects its past as a working community centered on the river and railroad, where families built homes and livelihoods around industry and trade.

The city has a friendly walkable layout that makes exploration on foot easy and navigation simple. Public areas like City Park and the downtown are accessible, particularly along the Main Street district with its historic buildings.

The city's population surged to around 15,100 by 1950, driven mainly by the chemical industry boom, but declined when factories closed in later decades. Despite these changes, the community has remained stable and continues to preserve its local character and stories.
