Osawatomie, County administration center in Miami County, Kansas, United States.

Osawatomie is a city in Miami County, Kansas that sits along the Marais des Cygnes River. The landscape here features trees and rolling hills, positioned roughly 100 kilometers southwest of Kansas City.

The city was founded in 1854 by abolitionists and played a central role in the Kansas-Missouri Border War. A major battle took place here in 1856 that shaped the region.

The John Brown Jamboree festival brings together local artisans, musicians, and community members each summer to celebrate the regional heritage.

The best time to explore is during warmer months when the nature around the river looks particularly green. Those on foot will find wide paths along the riverbank that are relatively flat and easy to access.

The name combines words from two different Native American languages: 'Osa' comes from the Osage people and 'watomi' from the Potawatomi. This linguistic blend reflects the long presence of different indigenous peoples in this region.
