SECU Stadium, Football stadium at University of Maryland, College Park, United States.
SECU Stadium is a football venue with seating for 51,802 people on the University of Maryland campus in College Park. The five-level structure houses luxury boxes, press areas and large video boards that overlook the playing field.
The venue opened on September 30, 1950, when Maryland defeated Navy by a score of 35 to 21. The original name Byrd Stadium was later changed after a sponsorship agreement.
On game days the stadium fills with students and alumni wearing Maryland's red, white and black, turning the stands into a sea of school colors. The turtle mascot Testudo appears throughout the venue, and fans often yell Fear the Turtle as a rallying cry during tense moments.
Visitors can enter the stadium through several gates that help reduce wait times before kickoff. The artificial turf surface keeps temperatures lower than traditional grass, making the field more comfortable on hot days.
In 1985 the Baltimore Stars of the United States Football League played their home games here during the spring season. The team won the championship that year before the league folded shortly afterward.
