University of Maryland Arboretum & Botanical Garden

The University of Maryland Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a 1250-acre facility with over 17,000 tree and woody plant specimens displayed across landscaped grounds. The collection spreads throughout the entire campus, creating a diverse plant environment for visitors and students.

The origins of this site trace back to 1856 when Charles B. Calvert established Maryland Agricultural College on 428 acres of Rossborough Farms. The grounds evolved over generations into an important educational and research center for plants.

The grounds include nearly 100 dedicated trees that commemorate specific events and individuals, creating a living memorial throughout the university campus.

Admission is free, with complimentary parking available after 4 pm on weekdays and throughout weekends, except during special events. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are expansive and require walking to explore.

The site earned recognition as a Bird Campus by the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership, demonstrating its design specifically supports habitats for native wildlife. Visitors often observe various bird species and other animals thriving in this environment.
