Calumet Park, Public park in East Side, Chicago, United States.
Calumet Park is a lakefront recreation area on Chicago's East Side, featuring two gymnasiums, a fitness center, and multiple sports fields. The park borders Lake Michigan with roughly a mile (1.6 km) of shoreline, giving it one of the longer beach stretches within the city.
The South Park Commission began developing the site in 1904 on a modest plot of land and expanded it considerably during the 1930s. A fieldhouse built in 1924 became a central gathering point for the area and continues to stand today.
The fieldhouse hosts classes in gymnastics, woodworking, and sewing that bring people from the neighborhood together on a regular basis. Rotating model train exhibitions also draw collectors and families throughout the year.
The beach can be reached from three access points near 96th, 98th, and 99th Streets along the Lake Michigan shore. A visit during summer months gives access to the full range of facilities the park has to offer.
The park marks the starting point of a cycling route that runs around the southern tip of Lake Michigan all the way to New Buffalo, Michigan, covering around 60 miles (97 km). The route follows the shoreline for much of its length, making it a popular choice for cyclists who want to explore the lake by bike.
