Wave Hill, Botanical garden and cultural center in Riverdale, The Bronx, US.
Wave Hill is a botanical garden and cultural center in Riverdale, The Bronx. The site covers about 28 acres and includes planted beds, lawns, greenhouses, and wooded slopes on a ridge overlooking the Hudson River.
The estate was established in the mid-1800s as a private residence and passed through several owners before being given to the city in 1960. Since then it has operated as a public garden with education and cultural programs.
The name refers to the gentle slopes that roll toward the river, giving visitors a setting where planted beds meet open lawns and wooded paths. Families and school groups often walk the grounds to learn about plants and spend time outdoors.
Access is from 249th Street, and the grounds are easy to walk through, though some paths climb steeply. Outdoor areas remain open in most weather, but greenhouses offer shelter and variety when conditions are less friendly.
Two historic houses still stand on the grounds and are used for events and exhibitions. The rocky woodlands were gradually cleared and replanted to bring back native species.
