Robert Colgate House

The Robert Colgate House is an Italianate residence built with ashlar Maine granite on Sycamore Avenue. It features a low-pitched roof with dormers and broad overhanging eaves that shelter a flat upper deck.

The house was built in 1860 for Robert Colgate, son of soap manufacturer William Colgate. It received New York City Landmark status and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The house served as a gathering place for the community when Riverdale Presbyterian Church held its first meeting there in 1863. This early use shows how the building became central to the neighborhood's religious and social life.

The house is located in the Hudson Hill area and can be viewed from the street where architectural details are clearly visible from a distance. Visitors should explore the neighborhood respectfully and admire it from the sidewalk.

Mining engineer Spruille Braden purchased the property in 1922, marking a turning point in the house's story. This change in ownership was documented by local press and shows how the property passed through the hands of notable residents over time.
