Maryland Science Center, Science museum in Inner Harbor, Baltimore, United States
This science museum in the Inner Harbor neighborhood of Baltimore holds several floors of exhibitions about space travel, dinosaurs and earth sciences. Inside there are many stations where you can move, press or watch things yourself.
The institution goes back to the Maryland Academy of Sciences, which was founded in 1797 to promote research and education in the region. The current building by the harbor came later and has been expanded several times over the decades.
Visitors can try things out at hands-on stations and run simple experiments that show how physics works in everyday life. Children and adults often stand side by side, testing together what happens when you move levers or send light through prisms.
The entrance sits right by the water of the Inner Harbor and is easy to reach on foot from downtown. Visitors coming with children should plan extra time, as many stations invite longer stops.
In the Davis Planetarium, visitors can lean back and follow projections of over 8,500 stars on the dome, which measures about 50 feet (15 meters) across. The shows use modern technology to recreate the night sky and the movements of celestial bodies.
