Baltimore Heritage Walk, trail linking 20 historic sites and museums
The Baltimore Heritage Walk is a route through the city's oldest neighborhoods covering roughly 3 miles and connecting twenty historic sites and museums. Small disks embedded in sidewalks mark the path, while storyboards alongside them explain the history of places you pass and how the city grew.
Baltimore grew from a quiet harbor town into a busy manufacturing and trade center, powered by its location along the Chesapeake Bay and waterways. The trail marks the city's pivotal role in the War of 1812, when it defended itself through key battles that shaped American history.
Little Italy displays Italian roots through small cafes, bakeries, and signs in Italian, preserving the traditions of communities that settled here long ago. The neighborhood's friendly character reflects how Italian families shaped local life and remain visible in everyday commerce and gathering spaces.
You can walk the route at your own pace, making it accessible for most visitors interested in exploring the city on foot. Guided tours are available from May through October and offer deeper stories about each site along the way.
Mr. Trash Wheel, a colorful robotic figure with large googly eyes, has sat in the harbor since 2014 cleaning debris from the water. This playful solution to environmental problems has become a city favorite, showing how Baltimore tackles modern challenges with creativity.
