Liberty State Park, Public park on Upper New York Bay in Jersey City, United States
Liberty State Park is a large waterfront park in Jersey City with open green spaces, paved paths, and viewing areas overlooking the water toward Manhattan. The park includes the Liberty Science Center, a railroad terminal building from the 1800s, and a memorial with tall steel walls.
The Central Railroad of New Jersey built its terminal here in 1892, serving millions of immigrants arriving from Ellis Island until the rail line closed in 1954. The site was later transformed into a public park.
The Empty Sky Memorial stands as a quiet place of reflection, with two tall steel walls bearing the names of 749 New Jersey residents lost in the September 11 attacks. Visitors often pause here to read the inscriptions and take in the meaning of this dedicated space.
The park is easy to walk through with flat paths and wide-open areas suitable for all visitors. Ferry terminals are located within the park grounds for direct access to nearby islands.
The Liberty Science Center within the park features an IMAX theater with a large dome screen and hands-on exhibits about space and nature. Many visitors spend significant time exploring these interactive displays.
