Moonville

Moonville is an abandoned mining settlement in Vinton County surrounded by dense forest and steep hillsides. The railroad tunnel remains the most prominent structure at this former coal extraction site, where buildings and infrastructure have largely vanished.

The settlement began in the 1800s after coal deposits were discovered, attracting the Cincinnati and Marietta Railroad to the area. Operations ceased as coal demand declined, leading to the site's eventual abandonment.

The settlement was once a center of Appalachian life and railroad culture in the region. Today, local gatherings keep this heritage alive by bringing together people interested in coal-era traditions.

The site is best reached through hiking trails near Lake Hope State Park, where the tunnel serves as the main destination. Visit during dry weather for safer trail conditions and easier navigation through the wooded terrain.
