Jericho, Residential hamlet in Nassau County, New York
Jericho is a residential area in Nassau County on Long Island, New York, covering roughly 4 square miles. The settlement consists mainly of single-family homes, schools, and small commercial strips connected by wide tree-lined streets.
English Quakers founded the settlement in the mid-17th century on farmland that once belonged to a large plantation. Over time the community grew around agricultural operations and later developed into a suburban town for commuters to New York City.
The name comes from biblical Jericho and recalls the religious roots of the early Quaker settlers. Today this historical background shows in several older buildings that still evoke the founding period.
The area lies roughly 30 miles (45 kilometers) east of Manhattan and is accessible via several main roads. Visitors wanting to explore older neighborhoods should look for side streets away from the through routes.
A house from the late 18th century hides a narrow staircase behind a closet panel that once sheltered escaped slaves. This construction is invisible from the outside and was rediscovered only during later renovations.
