West Suffield Mountain, Mountain summit in Connecticut, United States
West Suffield Mountain is a summit in Connecticut that stretches between the Berkshires and the Connecticut River Valley, rising about 710 feet (216 meters) above sea level. The mountain is made of basalt rock and has multiple hiking trails that pass through forests and lead to open rock ledges.
The mountain formed during the Triassic Period when the North American continent separated from Africa and Eurasia. This splitting left volcanic rock that today makes up the foundation of this summit.
The place sits along the Metacomet Trail, a well-known hiking route that guides walkers through different landscapes across Connecticut. People use this path to explore nature and discover other locations throughout the region.
The mountain has several entry points and paths for hikers, with maps and signs available to help find the right route. The trails pass through forests and can vary in difficulty depending on which path you choose.
The slopes of the mountain have warm zones at the top and cooler areas in the ravines, creating different plant communities. Rare plant species thrive in these cool hollows and are not found elsewhere in Connecticut.
