Located north of Clarkstown and Ramapo, Haverstraw extends over 27 square miles along the western bank of the Hudson River.
Established in 1788, the town originated from Dutch settlers who named it Haverstroo, referring to the oat straw growing along the riverside.
The population of 39,087 residents includes a substantial Dominican community, representing the diverse demographics of this Hudson Valley municipality.
The town government operates from One Rosman Road in Garnerville, providing municipal services and organizing regular community meetings.
Three distinct villages exist within the town boundaries, with the Village of Haverstraw containing the historic downtown business district.
