North Main Street School

North Main Street School is a brick building with Colonial Revival style, featuring a two-story structure and an enclosed central courtyard. The property sits on several acres and is surrounded by commercial and institutional buildings.

The brick building opened in 1917 to serve growing student numbers in the area. Expansions were added in later decades to adapt the school to changing educational needs.

The building reflects early twentieth-century school design and was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. It shows how educational spaces were built to support both learning and community gatherings.

The building sits on North Main Street about half a mile north of downtown and is easy to locate among other public buildings. Keep in mind this is an active school facility, so visiting the exterior works best on days when school is not in session.

Inside, the building preserves original features from when it was built, including a gymnasium with hardwood floors and a stage featuring a red velvet curtain. The basement also houses a fully tiled historic kitchen that shows how school meals were once prepared.
