Novo-Diveevo, Russian Orthodox monastery in Nanuet, New York, United States.
Novo-Diveevo is a Russian Orthodox monastery in Nanuet, New York, made up of two churches, a guest house, and one of the largest Russian Orthodox cemeteries in the United States. The property also includes a care facility for elderly residents that provides housing, meals, and medical support.
Father Adrian Rimarenko founded the monastery in 1949 to shelter Russian Orthodox believers who had fled their homeland after World War II. The name Novo-Diveevo refers directly to the Diveevo convent in Russia, one of the most revered sites in the Russian Orthodox church.
Services are held in both Russian and English, reflecting the community's ties to its origins and its new home. The cemetery on the grounds serves as a gathering place for Russian Orthodox families from across the northeastern United States.
The monastery is located north of New York City and is most easily reached by car. Visiting on a weekday gives more room to walk the grounds quietly, as weekend services draw larger gatherings of the faithful.
The grounds hold a portrait of Saint Seraphim of Sarov painted during his lifetime, which is considered extremely rare. They also preserve a cross from the Ipatiev House, the site in Russia where the last tsar and his family were killed in 1918.
