Alexander Bishop House
Alexander Bishop House, Historic residence in Powell, Knox County, Tennessee.
Alexander Bishop House is a late-eighteenth-century residence in Powell featuring timber construction with handcrafted wooden joints throughout. The structure displays wide floorboards, brick fireplaces, and building methods typical of that era's craftspeople.
Stockley Donelson, brother of Rachel Jackson, built this house in 1793, making it one of the oldest residences in the area. Two originally separate structures were joined together after 1825 and later received wooden cladding.
This residence shows how families lived and worked during Tennessee's frontier era, with practical rooms arranged for daily tasks. The layout of spaces and cooking areas reflected the needs of people who depended largely on themselves.
The house is located in Powell and can be viewed from outside, with the street side offering the best view of its architectural details. Walking access is straightforward and parking is available in the surrounding area.
The building was originally known by a relative founder's name and reflects how early frontier families were closely connected through kinship networks. This link to Rachel Jackson through the Donelson family gave the house its historical standing in the area.
