Cathedral of St. George Historic District
Cathedral of St. George Historic District, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in South Boston, United States.
The Cathedral of St. George Historic District comprises three buildings on East Broadway featuring Gothic Revival design with colored brick details and pointed arches. The complex includes the main cathedral alongside two companion brick structures from the 1870s.
The original building was constructed in 1872 as a Unitarian church and was purchased in 1949 by the Albanian Orthodox Church. This acquisition marked a major shift in the site's purpose and established it as a key center for Eastern Orthodox worship.
The complex serves as a center for the Eastern Orthodox community and maintains its connection to Boston's Albanian community through regular gatherings. The spaces are actively used for worship and community events.
The grounds are accessible on foot and located at a busy street corner in South Boston. Visitors should expect that access to parts of the complex may be restricted during active worship services.
The complex was originally part of a Unitarian congregation's property holdings and the two brick structures date from the same construction period as the church itself. These companion buildings are now included in the National Register listing and reflect the site's original development.
