The building was designed by architect Irwin T. Catharine and took about two years to complete from the start of construction in the early 1920s. Originally named Anna Howard Shaw Junior High School, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and later renamed Hardy Williams Academy.
The school is named after Hardy Williams, a community leader who worked for the neighborhood. Student uniforms with the school logo shape the appearance and create a sense of belonging among students.
