Masjid Al-Jamia of Philadelphia, Sunni mosque in West Philadelphia, United States.
Masjid Al-Jamia of Philadelphia is a Sunni mosque located in West Philadelphia in a former theater building on Walnut Street. The space combines Spanish Revival architecture with Islamic design and houses prayer halls, an Islamic school, and educational spaces for community members.
The mosque was founded in 1988 by the Penn Muslims Students Association as a university student initiative. In 2009, the Shura Council of Masjid Al-Jamia took over management and transformed it into an independent community institution.
The congregation brings together people from African, South Asian, and North African backgrounds who gather for daily prayers and community events.
The mosque is open daily for five prayer times, with Friday being the busiest time for the community. Visitors should wear modest clothing and remove shoes before entering the prayer areas.
The building was originally the Commodore Theatre built in 1928 and retained its Spanish Revival and Moorish architectural features after conversion. This blend of historic theater design and Islamic elements creates a visually distinctive interior space.
