USS Thornback

The USS Thornback, a Tench-class submarine measuring 311 feet in length, exhibits its original torpedo tubes and navigation equipment from World War II.

Commissioned in October 1944, the submarine served in the Pacific Theater and later operated with Submarine Squadron 4 in the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas.

The vessel demonstrates mid-20th century naval engineering through guided tours that reveal the confined living spaces of submarine crews during wartime operations.

Located at the Rahmi M. Koç Museum, visitors can explore multiple decks and compartments while learning about submarine operations through informative displays.

The submarine damaged a Japanese vessel with gunfire on July 31, 1945, marking its final combat engagement before Japan's surrender in World War II.
