Aya Dimitri Kilisesi

Aya Dimitri Kilisesi is an Orthodox church in Karagümrük featuring traditional Greek Orthodox architecture with ornate religious murals and an elaborate iconostasis inside. The building is accompanied by connected structures including a school and the Aya Ilyas fountain nearby.

This church was founded in 1204 during the early Byzantine period under Emperor Nicolas Canabée. Following a destructive fire in 1730 that swept through the Balat neighborhood, the building underwent significant reconstruction.
