Armsmear, Italian Villa mansion in Hartford, US
Armsmear is a three-story residence with Italian Villa styling and Moorish elements located in Hartford. The building features multiple glass conservatories and ornamental stone sculptures flanking the entrance.
Samuel Colt commissioned architect Octavius Jordan to design and build this mansion between 1856 and 1857. The Colt family occupied the home until Elizabeth Colt's death in 1905, marking the end of an era.
The residence displays architectural influences from different countries that the family brought back from their travels. Visitors can notice design elements inspired by Turkey, France, and Italy woven throughout the building.
The building was equipped with advanced systems for its era, including gas lighting and indoor plumbing throughout. These features reflect the high living standard possible during the 19th century.
The name Armsmear translates literally to 'the meadow of arms' and refers to the connection with Colt firearms manufacturing. This naming reflects Hartford's significant role in American weapons production.
