Ballajá Barracks, Military museum in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
Ballajá Barracks is a three-story building in the heart of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a central courtyard and Gothic vaulted ceilings above the main staircase. The building now houses a museum, a dance school, a coffee shop, a restaurant, a movie theater, and offices of cultural institutions.
The barracks were built between 1854 and 1864 as one of Spain's last major projects in the Americas, and housed Spanish troops until the Spanish-American War of 1898. After the war, US forces used the building until the second half of the 20th century, when it was converted for public use.
The museum on the second floor displays objects and exhibitions about the history of the American continents, taking visitors on a journey through the peoples of the New World. Alongside the museum, a dance school and a movie theater operate inside the building, making it an active place for arts today.
The building sits in the center of Old San Juan and is within walking distance of most of the neighborhood's landmarks. Stairs and elevators connect the floors, so visitors with limited mobility can access all levels.
The roof of the building features a green space with an artificial wetland system that collects rainwater for irrigation. This addition was designed to work without altering the historic structure of the building below.
