Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation
Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, National shrine and basilica in Carey, Ohio, United States.
The Basilica is a religious complex with red-brick Romanesque architecture that houses multiple altars and sculptures. The main structure was expanded in 1875 with a Luxembourg-commissioned statue that became the focal point of the site.
The complex began in 1868 with construction of St. Edward Church and received recognition as a Minor Basilica from Pope Paul VI in 1971. These events marked the transformation of a small house of worship into a larger religious center.
The place draws thousands each August 15, especially Roman Catholics of Middle Eastern descent who gather for processions and services. The community uses this day to share faith and tradition together.
The grounds offer daily masses and feature two distinct worship spaces, the original church and the lower basilica. Best time to explore is late morning when it is less crowded and you can visit both areas comfortably.
When the statue arrived from Frenchtown in 1875, carriers reported staying dry despite a thunderstorm raging around them. Visitors have recounted this event for generations, deepening the site's reputation as a place of spiritual significance.
