The Basilica features a red-brick Romanesque architectural design with multiple altars, statues, and a central Luxembourg-commissioned statue from 1875.
The construction of this religious complex began in 1868 with St. Edward Church, and Pope Paul VI designated it as a Minor Basilica in 1971.
Each August 15, thousands gather for the Feast of the Assumption, including many Roman Catholics of Middle Eastern descent who participate in religious processions.
The shrine provides daily masses, confessions on Saturdays from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM, and regular adoration services in both the Original Shrine Church and Lower Basilica.
During the statue's procession from Frenchtown in 1875, participants carrying it reportedly remained dry despite a surrounding thunderstorm.
