Blaine Island, River island in South Charleston, United States
Blaine Island is a river island in South Charleston located along the Kanawha River where industrial manufacturing facilities operate. The site functions as a working production complex with multiple companies running chemical and petrochemical operations.
The island was acquired by Union Carbide Corporation in 1927 to expand chemical production operations in the region. This addition followed earlier manufacturing plants and established the location as a major industrial hub.
Fleming Cobb, among the first settlers of South Charleston, planted two pear trees on the island in 1780, which survived through the twentieth century.
The site is an active industrial facility and not open to public visits. You can view the island from the riverbanks, but direct access to the grounds is not permitted.
Before industrial use, the island served as a recreation area with a public beach and airfield for aerial performances. This earlier role as an entertainment destination contrasts sharply with its current manufacturing purpose.
