Bernheim Forest and Arboretum
Bernheim Forest and Arboretum, Experimental forest and arboretum in Bullitt County, Kentucky, United States
Bernheim Forest and Arboretum is a large protected woodland with walking paths leading through collections of native and international plants alongside research facilities. The property includes specialized garden sections and areas dedicated to scientific study.
Isaac W. Bernheim founded this forest preserve in 1929 as a personal conservation project. It grew to become one of the largest privately protected forests in the eastern United States.
An Artist in Residence program has operated here since 1980, bringing creative installations into the natural setting. Visitors walking through the grounds can encounter these artworks integrated with the forest itself.
The forest is open daily from sunrise to sunset, with walking paths of varying difficulty for different visitors. Bring sturdy shoes and prepare for weather changes depending on the season.
The arboretum section houses rare tree species including Georgia oak, roundleaf birch, and Japanese bigleaf magnolia across its grounds. This collection makes it a significant location for botanical research and preservation of uncommon plants.
