Bertrand Island Amusement Park, Amusement park on Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey.
Bertrand Island was an amusement park built on a narrow peninsula in Lake Hopatcong, surrounded by water on three sides. The site featured roughly 20 rides and attractions, including roller coasters, arcades, and various entertainment facilities.
The site originated as a bathing beach in the early 1900s and transformed into an amusement park during the 1920s under Louis Kraus's expansion. It operated as a summer destination until closing in 1983.
Generations of families gathered at Bertrand Island to enjoy rides, arcade games, and summer entertainment from the 1920s through the early 1980s.
The park was accessible by public transportation, with buses from Landing Lake Hopatcong station providing direct service to the entrance. This made it a convenient destination for day visitors traveling from the surrounding region.
The Wildcat roller coaster, installed in 1925, was one of the first wooden coasters in North Jersey and remained a central attraction throughout the park's operation. Its classic design made it a memorable ride for generations of visitors.
