Hopatcong State Park, Public recreational area at Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, United States.
Hopatcong State Park is a recreational area along Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest freshwater lake. The park spans about 165 acres and provides access to the water and adjacent shoreline, with space for swimming, boating, and fishing activities.
The lake took shape in the 1830s as part of the Morris Canal, a major transportation project designed to move coal and minerals across New Jersey. When the canal closed in the 1920s, the lake shifted from an industrial route to a recreation destination.
The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum occupies an 1825 residence and displays artifacts from Native American peoples and records of the Morris Canal's operations. Visitors can learn how these stories shaped the region and its communities.
The park has a designated swimming beach with lifeguards on duty from late May through early September. Arriving early on weekends helps secure a parking spot, especially during warm weather.
The park preserves an original turbine from the Morris Canal's lock system, removed and relocated as a relic of the vanished infrastructure. This mechanical piece tells the story of the engineering behind a transport network that operated nearly two centuries ago.
