Brigadoon State Nature Preserve, Protected natural area in Barren County, Kentucky, United States.
Brigadoon State Nature Preserve is a protected natural area in Barren County featuring mature stands of beech, maple, and tulip poplar along a reservoir. A one-mile walking trail winds through the woodland, allowing visitors to move through different forest zones at an easy pace.
The land was owned by the Renfro family from the late 1700s until 1960, during which time timber cutting was kept to a minimum and limited to family needs. This light management allowed the forests to develop into the mature stands seen today.
The forest provides critical habitat for birds that travel long distances during migration seasons and shelters plant species found nowhere else in the state. Walking through this protected land, visitors can see why local communities value its preservation.
The trail is easiest to walk in sturdy shoes that grip well on natural surfaces and are comfortable for a full mile. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather for a visit, with fewer muddy patches than other seasons.
The forest floor blooms with wildflowers in spring, including several plant species so rare within Kentucky that they are rarely seen elsewhere. This fleeting display makes early visits worthwhile for those interested in observing lesser-known plant life.
