Calvin Coolidge Bridge, Truss bridge in Northampton, US.
The Calvin Coolidge Bridge is a truss structure spanning the Connecticut River and connecting Northampton with Hadley. The crossing features four traffic lanes and is defined by prominent granite pylons at each corner.
The bridge was built in 1937 and replaced an earlier structure destroyed during the major flood of 1936. The new construction was part of the region's recovery effort following that disaster.
The large granite pylons at each corner display bronze plaques related to President Calvin Coolidge and his ties to Northampton. These memorial markers are woven into the town's local identity.
The crossing carries Route 9 traffic and is readily accessible for pedestrians and cyclists from both sides of the river. Visitors can view the pylons from pathways on each side.
The Art Deco design with weathered green steel railings and specialized cobra head light fixtures creates a visual detail that many drivers overlook. These design elements are distinctive to 1930s-era bridges.
