Canal Place

Canal Place Museum sits at the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal on 58 acres and features exhibits about canal operations and transportation history. The collection focuses on the commercial shipping era and how this waterway system worked.

The building started as a railroad station built in 1913 for the Western Maryland Railway. It was later transformed to preserve and share the canal's past.

The museum displays how families lived and worked along the waterway, with exhibits showing boat construction methods and lock operations. You can see how daily life unfolded for those who made their living on the canal.

The museum is located at 13 Canal Street and provides ample parking for visitors. The site connects with the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Station for additional activities nearby.

The museum houses a full-size replica of a canal boat called The Cumberland, positioned in the Trestle Walk area for demonstrations. This replica boat helps visitors understand how actual vessels operated on the waterway.
