Canoe-Picnic Point State Park, State park on Grindstone Island, New York.
Canoe-Picnic Point State Park is a 70-acre park at the northeast end of Grindstone Island that overlooks Eel Bay and the Canadian Channel in the St. Lawrence River. The land juts into the water and offers waterfront access along with open areas for visitors to pause and take in the river views.
The park was established in 1897 by the New York State Fisheries, Game and Forest Commission as part of an effort to manage and protect the river landscape. This founding reflected an early commitment to preserving natural spaces along the waterway for public use.
The name comes from the American Canoe Association, which gathered here regularly for its yearly meetings long ago. This location served as a gathering point for paddlers who came together in this remote island setting.
This location is reachable only by watercraft from Wellesley Island, so visitors need their own boat or must arrange water transportation. The park has docking facilities, camping spots, shower buildings, and water stations to serve those spending time here.
This location sits in the path of totality for the 2024 solar eclipse, providing visitors with about 3 minutes and 20 seconds of complete darkness. This rare astronomical event makes it a notable viewing spot for this natural phenomenon.
