Carlos Avery Game Farm, Historic game farm in Linwood Township, United States
Carlos Avery Game Farm is a historic wildlife facility in Linwood Township containing eleven colonial-style buildings arranged across the administrative center of a wildlife management area. The complex features specialized structures that were designed for bird breeding and population management.
The land was purchased in 1933 by Minnesota's conservation department from the Crex Carpet Company to establish a wildlife refuge and breeding facility. This acquisition marked the beginning of organized wildlife management efforts in the state.
The farm played a pioneering role in wildlife management across Minnesota through its breeding programs that shaped how the state approaches conservation today. Visitors can see how the facility once worked to restore bird populations to the landscape.
The grounds are accessible for visitors to explore, with much of the 4,500-acre sanctuary closed to hunting. Other sections of the management area offer opportunities for activities like hiking and wildlife viewing.
The construction project totaling 40,887 dollars was funded 85 percent by the Works Progress Administration, a Depression-era job program that shaped many public works across America. This support enabled the construction of specialized structures like bird incubation facilities.
