Cayuga Lake State Park, State park at Cayuga Lake, New York, US
Cayuga Lake State Park is a New York State park on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, offering sandy beaches, walking trails, and wooded areas along the waterfront. The grounds also include a boat launch, picnic areas, and a campground a short walk from the lake.
The park was established in 1921 as one of the first public access points to Cayuga Lake, at a time when the shoreline was mostly in private hands. Over the following decades it grew into a full recreational site under the management of New York State Parks.
The name Cayuga comes from the Haudenosaunee people, who lived along these shores long before the first settlers arrived. That name is still in everyday use today, carried by the lake, the park, and several towns in the region.
The park is open from May through October, and the beach and camping areas get busy during summer weekends. Booking a campsite ahead of time is a good idea if you plan to stay overnight, as spots tend to fill up fast.
Cayuga Lake is one of the deepest lakes in North America, and most of its water stays cold even in the middle of summer. Swimmers who venture away from the shallows near shore will feel that temperature drop quite quickly.
