Centreport Aqueduct, historic aqueduct in Cayuga County, New York
The Centreport Aqueduct is a historic wooden and stone structure near Weedsport in New York that carried the Erie Canal over Cold Spring Brook. Built around 1854, the aqueduct measured approximately 125 feet long and 16 feet high, featuring a wooden trough supported by stone piers rather than the arched designs typical of similar structures from that era.
Construction of the aqueduct began in 1854 to help boats cross natural streams and improve the canal's efficiency for moving goods. After more than 60 years of use, the structure lost importance when a larger canal system was built in the early 1900s, and by 1917 it was no longer in operation.
The aqueduct is located beside New York Route 31 west of Weedsport and is easily accessible from the road. The site was developed as a roadside park in the 1970s with walking paths, allowing visitors to view the structure from different angles and walk across the historic towpath bridge.
Unlike typical aqueducts of its time, this structure relied on wooden troughs and stone piers rather than stone arches, making its design unusual for the era. Photographs taken in 2007 show the interior of the old canal from different angles, helping visitors understand how this distinctive construction method worked.
